On November 3rd, 2018 the Penn State Cancer Institute (PSCI) hosted the 9th Annual Cancer Education Summit at the I.W. Abel Hall in Steelton, PA. The theme, Be Inspired, Take Charge, and Navigate Your Health, was selected to motivate and inspire participants toward positive personal choices. The agenda included insightful discussions with oncologists, social workers, and primary care physicians. The 132 participants were motivated by the stories of cancer survivors and caregivers. We also enjoyed networking with new and previous friends, and being inspired to move our bodies!
While this was the 9th yearly occurrence of the summit, some things were different. This was my first summit; I joined the Penn State Cancer Institute just this past August 2018. Second, we had LionCare provide free blood pressure screenings and Penn State Health gave free flu vaccinations. Finally, we emphasized navigation as critical strategy to reducing the cancer burden in central Pennsylvania.
The summit, held annually on the first Saturday in November, is one part of PSCI’s commitment to long-term, community-based research. The PSCI is eager to explore, engage and learn about the cancer-related issues and concerns for residents in the Steelton/Harrisburg communities. We understand issues such colorectal cancer, breast cancer, nutrition, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity are important. A key to addressing these issues is a healthy dialogue and exchange with community members throughout Central PA to learn how the PSCI can expand our presence and improve health outcomes in the areas. Of course, navigation is a key strategy to addressing health issues.
Whether it’s a family member, friend, neighbor or you that’s affected by cancer, we often hear “how do I avoid these devastating diseases?” While we don’t have all the answers, the PSCI is here to help people beat this disease. Navigators at PSCI and elsewhere are knowledgeable about community resources and can provide guidance and direction for those challenged by cancer.
We are really pleased that 18 summit participants expressed interest in becoming community volunteers to help fight cancer in the Steelton/Harrisburg communities. We are planning a January meeting for these volunteers. If you would like to join these inspired community members, or if you have ideas, suggestions, or recommendations, please email me at llemelle@pennstatehealth.psu.edu or call me at (717) 537-1050.
I look forward to working with you and building a healthier central Pennsylvania.
