On Saturday, November 4, 2017 the Penn State Cancer Institute held its 8th Annual Cancer Education Summit in Harrisburg, PA. It was held at the IW Able banquet hall, 200 Gibson St in Steelton from 8:00am till 2:00pm. Our theme this year was “Primary Care”. We emphasized the importance of the basic office visit to your primary care physician. This is most often the point where our medical issues will be discovered or dealt with initially.
The summit format was developed, coordinated and sponsored by the Penn State Cancer Institute and executed by their 16 Community Health Workers. The Community Health Workers are a cadre of community volunteer’s dedicated to reducing cancer in Harrisburg.
The primary purpose of this annual summit is to provide participants with evidence-based strategies to reduce the impact of cancer on individuals and the community of Harrisburg. This year’s event was attended by 152 people, mostly community members. Dr. Kantner and Dr. Spell from our own Penn State Medical Group clinic at 2626 N. 3rd street presented on the theme of the day: The Importance of Primary Care. One of the high points of the program was the doctor’s panel discussion formed by a team of Penn State physicians, led by Dr. Harold Harvey. The physicians discussed the latest breakthroughs in cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. We also discussed the importance of physical activity and genetic testing to understand family cancer risk. Another guest speaker, also from Penn State Health. Dr. Betsy Aumiller presented on “Stress”.
