The recently released CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Invasive Cancer Incidence, 2004-2013, and Deaths, 2006-2015, in Nonmetropolitan and Metropolitan Counties – United States, provides the first comprehensive description of cancer incidence and mortality in rural and urban counties in the U.S. The next CDC MMWR Rural Health Series webinar will provide insights into this report, which found that rural counties have a higher incidence of and death rates from cancers related to tobacco use and cancers that can be prevented by screening.

Jane Henley, co-author of the CDC MMWR, will share the data on the rural-urban disparities in cancer incidence and mortality and examine some of the factors contributing to these findings. CDC will be joined by Dr. Robert Croyle, director of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences within NIH’s National Cancer Institute, and Dr. Jane Bolin, director of the Southwest Rural Health Research Center at Texas A&M Health Science Center to discuss cancer control and community-level approaches aimed at reducing the risk of cancer among rural populations.
